Treat pain and crowding with a wisdom teeth removal dentist in Mississauga
Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to develop, and they can emerge anywhere from age 16-25. Because our bodies are adapting to a different diet, wisdom teeth are no longer necessary to chew and swallow your food. Unfortunately, they can cause pain and lead to oral health problems if left untreated. Huron Dental Centre in Mississauga has a wisdom teeth removal dentist on staff to help.
Not everyone needs a wisdom tooth extraction. Some people never develop them, and others have plenty of room in their jaw to support wisdom teeth. The extra set of molars becomes problematic if they grow crooked or become impacted and can’t erupt normally. Or, they may cause crowding with your other teeth.
What to expect during your extraction?
Different people will require different kinds of extraction. Some wisdom teeth extractions are as simple as pulling the tooth, while others require an oral surgeon to cut into the gums and remove them. The surgeon may also need to break a tooth into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove. Depending on the patient and the extent of the procedure, you may use a local anesthetic, oral sedation, or general anesthesia to help you be comfortable throughout the procedure.
It’s normal to be nervous before oral surgery. Dr. Jifri will talk with you about your fears. In most cases, the surgery will be done in-office without the need for an outside specialist. Dr. Jifri welcomes her patients to discuss their anxiety and make sure you understand everything you should expect on the day of your appointment.

Post-procedure care
You may get food stuck in the extraction holes from your wisdom teeth for the first few weeks after extraction. You can clear this up by following your regular brushing routine and, after the first day, using a saltwater rinse and vigorous swishing. This should be done 5-6 times a day, especially after eating. You will also need to follow a soft food diet for about a week.
While some patients won’t experience pain after the procedure, others may have swelling and discomfort for a few days. The extraction site will take a few weeks to heal completely, and most patients won’t require a follow-up appointment.
