How long does wisdom tooth extraction take?
At Huron Dental Centre, Dr. Jameela Jifri and her associates in Mississauga, Ontario, offer solutions for those dealing with problems that stem from their third molars, otherwise known as the “wisdom teeth.” Wisdom teeth tend to become an issue for many individuals when they attempt to come through the gum line during the late teen or early adult years. Additionally, even if they do not become impacted underneath the gums, they can emerge and be difficult to clean, leaving the smile at risk for periodontal disease and tooth decay. In most situations, removal is necessary and may be performed at our practice.
How long does wisdom tooth extraction take?
Patients interested in wisdom tooth removal often ask about the process and what to expect. Wisdom tooth removal is done in one of two ways, with simple or surgical extraction. Simple extraction of wisdom teeth is done when the tooth is above the gum line and can be accessed easily by the dentist. A special instrument is used to remove the tooth in minutes. Alternatively, if a wisdom tooth is impacted in the jaw, it must be surgically removed. This is a more invasive procedure but can be done quickly as well. However, surgical extraction of wisdom teeth will often involve longer recovery and downtime.
How do I care for the area after the tooth has been removed?
Aftercare will depend on the type of procedure used for removal. A simple extraction requires patients to be careful about brushing in the area and consider consuming softer foods for a few days. Surgical extraction requires a few weeks of aftercare, including a longer period of eating softer foods and taking great care in allowing the area to heal properly to avoid the risk of infection or other complications.
