What you need to know about wisdom tooth extraction services
At Huron Dental Centre of the Mississauga, Ontario, area, Dr. Jameela Jifri and her associates offer new and returning patients a wide range of services to ensure our patients have access to the dental treatments they need when needed. This includes extracting the wisdom teeth, often the most problematic teeth for many of our patients. Let’s look at the third molars, why they might need removal, and what to expect during the process.
What are the wisdom teeth?
Our team describes the wisdom teeth, or the “third molars,” as the four permanent teeth at the back corners of our mouth. These teeth usually come through between the ages of seventeen and twenty-five.
Why might we be told we need a wisdom tooth extraction?
The wisdom teeth often cause problems, including overcrowding, impacted teeth, infection, and cavities. In many situations at Huron Dental Centre, these teeth might not have enough room to emerge properly, leading to pain or discomfort in the jaw and surrounding areas. Extracting them or removing them can prevent these issues from occurring.
How is wisdom tooth extraction performed?
This procedure is typically done with patients under local anesthesia at Huron Dental Center. If all four wisdom teeth are extracted simultaneously, general anesthesia may be used for a more comfortable experience. The procedure will then vary depending on whether the teeth are impacted or have erupted above the gumline. Teeth that are accessible to Dr. Jifri and her team are removed with less invasive techniques, while impacted teeth may require a more involved surgery. The tooth will be gently loosened and then carefully extracted from the socket using specialized tools.

What can I expect after my molar removal?
After the extraction, gauze is placed over the area to control bleeding and promote blood clot formation. Our team always instructs patients on how to properly care for their mouths and alleviate discomfort during the healing process. These instructions might include changes in habits like avoiding smoking cigarettes, drinking through a straw, or eating very hard or chewy foods for a certain period.
What is the recovery process like?
The recovery process after your wisdom tooth extraction might vary depending on your healing abilities and the complexity of the procedure performed. Some of our patients might experience minimal discomfort and be able to return to their daily activities within a few days, while others might take longer to fully recover.
During the first twenty-four hours after your surgery, it is normal for your mouth to feel sore and swollen. To minimize discomfort and aid in healing, you can apply an ice pack on the outside of your face near the extraction site. This reduces swelling and numbs any pain.
It is important that you follow any and all post-operative instructions provided by Dr. Jifri and her team to ensure proper healing. This often includes taking prescribed pain medication as needed, gently rinsing your mouth with warm salt water, and avoiding certain foods that could irritate the surgical site.
